fare thee well, twenty-eleven!

photo taken from a balcony in cuenca in 2009

i can't believe the year is over already.
it's kind of mind-boggling, really.

but, as far as years go, 2011 was pretty great!

graduated from college,
turned twenty-four,
saw mates of state and arcade fire,
got a job i absolutely love,
came up with a plan for my life,
spent some quality time with my family,
cooked and baked some delicious food,
and finally moved out of rexburg!

not bad, eh?

but as much as i enjoyed 2011, i'm excited for this new year and a new beginning.

i recently read this post over at a beautiful mess about making and keeping new years resolutions and it really inspired me!
so, as a result, personal goals have been made, and i'm excited to actually achieve them this year!
i usually abandon my new years resolutions after a month, but this year is different [i say this every year but i really mean it this time] and i'm super motivated to work hard and improve myself!

here's hoping that 2012 is just as awesome as 2011 [or better yet, more so]!
happy new year, everyone!

23 December 2011

ludachristmas!

listen while baking, snowflake-making, present-wrapping, or christmas dance partying!

"vermont should be beautiful this time of the year, with all that underwear."

today is, as my eleven year-old niece calls it, "christmas adam" [because adam came before eve and tomorrow is christmas eve].
it's been fun around the jorgensen household!
nickel city, cookiebaking, wrapping presents, and lots of eating out [in the immortal words of my father, "hey! we're on vacation!"].
super awesome.

tonight i'm hoping to bake some more treats and watch white christmas and/or elf, two of my very favorite christmas movies.

i hope you all are having a lovely holiday so far!

here are some special christmas songs that are so dear to my heart performed by the best musicians of our generation: garth and kat.

merry christmas!

two things:

1. this is adorable.
2. she is awesome.

29 November 2011

i could drink a case of you and still be on my feet.

i'm not a big joni mitchell fan, but i stumbled upon this song today and just can't. get. enough.
i love the simple guitar arrangement, the ethereal vocals, the lilting melody, and the bittersweet lyrics.
it's perfect.
listen to this with a mug of hot tea in your hands.
it's the perfect thing to do on a tuesday evening.
especially after such long, difficult day.

27 November 2011

now i am older than my mother and father when they had their daughter. now, what does that say about me?

i never know what to write these days.
not much has changed.

work is still going well. i love my job.
the singles ward is still almost unbearable.
i still miss my friends like crazy.

but, i got to see mates of state again a couple weeks ago!
and my thanksgiving was wonderful!
and my niece, ingrid, is the cutest one year-old on earth [how is she one already?? insane]!

in other news, i am my ward's resident spinster.
i am very proud of this.
today, while in relief society, we were talking about marriage [which, by the way, makes me want to scream ENOUGH ALREADY!] and i made a comment about how marriage doesn't magically solve problems, make people happier, or improve one's quality of life. i then went on to say that life is all about improvement and finding joy in everyday life, and that, as single women, we have the power to achieve so many great things if we apply ourselves and focus on who we are now instead of wishing we were in a different situation.
i've never received more confused looks in my life.
and i once walked around northtown mall when i was in high school sporting a hot pink plastic tiara [i was obviously not the super cool person i am today during those formative teenage years*].

i digress.

in celebration of this experience, i have made the following playlist with all my old maids in mind. to my fellow spinsters, i invite you to listen to the dulcet tones of beyonce, fleet foxes, elton john, and maria taylor and give thanks for this marvelous stage of life! in the words of liz lemon, and my new mantra, "yes to love! yes to life! yes to staying in more!"

enjoy!

*this is sarcasm.

31 October 2011

werewolf bar mitzvah! spooky! scary! boys becoming men, men becoming wolves!

happy halloween, friends!

i have had the most wonderful halloween ever in my life times a million bazillion.
we had an awesome halloween party at work where i came dressed up as hermione granger,
i danced my little tush off with all my fantastically-costumed students
[and even had a couple of dance-offs with a student dressed like pansy parkinson],
and saw some pretty awesome breakdance moves.

it was the best. day. ever.

the only thing that can possibly come close to topping it is this insane halloween video featuring a very young tim curry.

ENJOY!

dos aƱos

i realized today that it has officially been two years since i returned home from ecuador.

two.
whole.
years.

can you believe it?
i sure can't.

i spent some time today looking through all my photos and reading my blog posts and journal that i wrote throughout my time there.

and i came to this realization once again: that experience--those brief two-and-a-half months--changed my life completely.

because of my time in ecuador, i now know what i want to do with my life.
as i've mentioned before, i am an aide in a special needs classroom. it is the most wonderful job on earth and i LOVE it. in fact, i love it so much i am looking into programs through different universities that can get me certified as a special ed teacher. i truly feel like it's my calling in life.
and if i had never gone to ecuador, i never would've gotten that job that has influenced my future plans in a major way.
when i told the principal and teachers in my job interview about my time there and what i had done, they offered me the job on the spot.
i don't even want to think about how miserable i would be today if i had never gone to ecuador and had just stuck with spanish education as my major.

because of my time in ecuador, i now know how to love unconditionally and be patient.
even though i loved being in south america and working with such adorable children, there were still hard days. there were days i was thrown up on, a specific day in which a child smeared her poop all over me, and days where nothing went right.
but then something would happen to make it all worth it and cause me to still love those children and the work i was doing there.
one experience in particular demonstrates this very well.
i was working in the cunas [infants and toddlers] one evening and this one child, who was infamous for being a pill, was hitting kids left and right, pulling hair, stealing toys, and was even caught biting a poor, sweet, innocent baby.
he was a hellion.
as i was changing his diaper and putting his sleeper on him before bedtime, the annoyances didn't stop. every time i would zip up his sleeper, he would unzip it. i would literally turn my back on him for two seconds and all of the clothes i had just put on him would be on the floor.
at the end of my rope, i put his sleeper on backwards, picked him up, put him in his crib, and said a hasty "buenas noches."
but as i turned to walk away, he held his arms out to me and uncharacteristically gave me a long hug and a sweet goodnight kiss on the cheek.
after that happened, every frustration i had felt regarding his behavior that afternoon completely disappeared and love filled my entire being.
i still remember that and apply that to the work i do now.

because of my time in ecuador, i graduated from byui more quickly.
as some of you may remember, i had been in quarter life crisis mode for a while before and during the time i was in south america.
but it was being in south america that changed my perspective on what i should be studying in school.
and, as a result, i graduated two semesters earlier than i would've graduated if i had stayed in the spanish education program.
that may be the biggest blessing of all [not really--but i sure am glad i'm not in rexburg anymore].

because of my time in ecuador, i now want to have children.
during my preteen and teenage years, my mom and i watched a lot of TLC.
this was before the monstrosity of "toddlers and tiaras" and "four weddings" [a terrible show in which bratty brides harshly judge each others' weddings and compete for a "dream honeymoon"].
we would watch "a wedding story" [which i LOVED--but i've always loved weddings, so that's not a big surprise] and "a baby story."
when it came to watching "a baby story" less was more, in my opinion. i'd watch the first part where the couple talks about how excited they were to be parents, skip the labor and delivery part, and then watch the end where they showed the baby and what they named it and how big it was.
after hearing the moans and screams and other scary things that happened during the delivery scenes, i decided promptly that i would only adopt and never give birth. too disgusting.
and i felt that way up until i got back from ecuador.
i still want to adopt, of course, but for some reason, being around those beautiful, sweet kids just made me want children of my own.

a friend who had gone to ecuador once before and actually introduced me to the program once told me that even though she had been home for over a year, she still thought about "her" kids every single day.
and now i can say that even though it's been two years for me, i think about my ninos every day. i worry about them, hope they're doing well, and wish i could be back there to take care of them once again. in one of my posts from that time, i said that i cared for those darling kids as if they were my own. and that is still true. i still care for and love them even though we are thousands of miles apart and now spread out all over the world [thanks to their adoptive families].

i wish there was a way i could give back what they gave me.
i wish there was a way they could know how much they changed my life for the better.

i guess for now i'll just have to stick to remembering and thinking of them often and applying the lessons i learned there to my life now.

[cute baby and my gargantuan hand.]

i have three things to say to you:
1. you live too far away.
2. i miss you.
3. let's all move into a big house and have arguments about whose turn it is to do the dishes!

i'm a little rexburg-sick.
now that school has started back up at byuidaho and all my friends are up there, i really miss the college life and having people to hang out with.

the easy solution to this conundrum?
make some new friends here in utah.
the problem with that is that i don't make friends easily.
the group of friends i had in rexburg were [and still are] the best friends i've ever had in my life.
it took me four whole years to find them and i know that i won't find friends like that anytime soon [or ever again].

so, i guess i'll just continue to go to bed at 8:30pm every night and play board games with my family
[not that there's anything wrong with that]
and miss and miss and miss those people listed above.

r.i.p. amy

i heard this song on the way back from park city this afternoon and completely forgot how much i love it.
it's so deliciously motown-y.
it was the perfect coming home jam.

listen.
and enjoy.

"i must've given you a heart attack!" "no, you gave me heartburn."

today i...
rode on a school bus for the first time in ten years,
was mistaken for a nineteen year-old,
laughed a lot,
tried to absorb the huge amount of information given to me,
watered plants in a nursery,
listened to the weakerthans on the commute to school and beyonce on the way back,
saw my brother and his [adorable] family,
and ate lunch at 10:30am [that will definitely take some time to get used to].

AND,
it's thursday! which means it's project runway day!
i can't waaaaaaaaaait.

all in all, i can't complain.
life is pretty great at the moment!

ps: the quote in the subject line is brought to you from one of the students i worked with today. he is super funny and is always cracking jokes!

31 August 2011

falling into place.

last week [and monday of this week] i had the privilege to watch my baby niece, ingrid, while my brother and sister-in-law prepped for a big photo shoot for their business and the new website they're launching.
after experiencing such a difficult week the week before, it was an absolute blessing to spend some time with such a precious child. i loved and savored every second i had to spend with her and thought that life couldn't possibly get any better.

and then, on friday, i received a call from the springville museum of art informing me that i had been accepted as an intern.
and then an hour after that phone call, i got a job interview!

it was a very eventful day.

on monday morning i had my job interview and was offered the job on the spot! upon accepting it, i was worried that i wouldn't be able to juggle both my internship and my job, but everything has worked out perfectly!

it's pretty amazing and i'm so grateful that things have gone so smoothly. i was very nervous about moving back home and finding a job and being happy, but it's been such a smooth transition!

prayers are answered, people!

now all i need are some friends
[and maybe (just maybe) a cute boy].

22 August 2011

hello, again!

hello, dear friends!
i'm sorry i have neglected this blog of mine for over a month.
yikes.

i've tried writing a few different posts, but each one was dumber than the last.

but, i feel like i need to document what has transpired and not be a perfectionist about it.

so, here goes.

in the past month, i have:
graduated from college
started redoing my room [my walls are grey!]
gone to an ok ikumi/boy who could fly show
gotten lost in the provo temple baptistry,
helped my sister pack up her belongings in a moving truck
said goodbye to said sister as she moved to indiana
missed my sister who has moved to indiana
applied to many jobs and an internship at a local museum
started going to a new singles ward
received a calling {relief society instructor [exciting! my favorite calling! (no sarcasm)]}
played with my niece and nephews lots and lots
and experienced my very first break-up.

it's been a busy month.
and although it hasn't been easy [when is life ever easy?!], i've learned so, so much about myself.

i'm kind of a wreck right now, but i know that i'll be able to get through this difficult transitory state with a lot of help. my parents have already helped me out more than i can say by giving me sound advice, comfort, and thousands of much-needed hugs.

now i sound braggy.

anyway.

i've been looking forward to this time in my life for so long and i think i always imagined it being magically a thousand times better than my life in idaho, but i realized today that i have to work just as hard to be happy here as i did in rexburg.

so, from here on out, i'm done with the pouting and the crying [everyday] and ringing in this new phase of my life with a newfound positive attitude.

here goes!
wish me luck!

[and don't worry... i'll be back soon! here's to not neglecting my blog for over a month ever again (unless i have a really good reason to)!]

14 July 2011

hiatus.

this blog is officially on hiatus [even though it's been on an unofficial hiatus for the last two weeks] until july twenty-third two thousand eleven.
school is taking over my entire life right now.
prayers are welcome.

BUT,
i got my cap and gown and tassel and commemorative alumni keychain and license plate cover today!
i guess this graduation thing is really happening! weeeeeeeirrrrrdddd.

AND
i'm going to see harry potter and the deathly hallows part two at midnight tomorrow with a very cute boy [shh! don't tell the honor code police (aka gestapo)]!

life is good and extremely stressful.

anyway!

friends and familia, goodbye for now.

the next time you hear from me on this blog, i will be a college graduate [if i pass all my classes]!

besos!

01 July 2011

three items of business

1. it is officially JULY! which means i can officially say i graduate from college THIS MONTH! woohoo!

2. i'm a huge baby. my parents are in ireland right now and i haven't been able to call my mom and i cried yesterday because of it.
i seriously need to grow up.

3. this is the funniest video i've seen in a long, long time:

lack of sleep/excess of homework + sounds of summer: royksopp

i'm in a terrible mood today.
my room is right underneath my upstairs neighbors' kitchen and for the last week, i've been woken up at around 4:30-5:00am every morning by the sounds of someone stomping around upstairs.
it happened again this morning.
luckily, after about an hour, the elephant who lives upstairs left the kitchen and i was able to sleep again.
but i woke up an hour later.
and then a half hour after that.
and then another hour after that.
and so on and so forth until 10:45am.

i have a major headache and a spanish test to take today [which i am a little nervous about] so, all in all, i'm a little grumpy.

as we all know, the cure for grumpiness is good music.

enter royksopp.

my brother introduced these norwegian dudes to me last summer and love their electro-pop sound and dance club vibe.
it's impossible to listen to the opening track, "happy up here," and not have a smile on your face.
in fact, after listening to that very song, my grumpy mood is now 35% subsided!
it's a christmas miracle!

listen to this album on your next summer morning run or while getting ready for a girls night out!

sounds of summer: best coast

best album cover art ever.

this has been my walking around rexburg soundtrack.
it's perfect for sunny and warm days like today.
this album, "crazy for you" by best coast has themes of secret crushes, unrequited love, and the glory of summer.
it also has a poppy, surf rock-y and even at times motown-y feel to it.

listen to it the next time you find yourself doodling your first name plus his last name all over your diary.

favorite tracks:

22 June 2011

there are some mornings when the sky looks like a road.

all i want to do this evening is lay in a hammock with a good book and listen to joanna newsom.
especially this song.

guess what.

in exactly one month i will be graduating from college,
leaving rexburg FOREVER,
and embarking on a new phase of life.

i am a little nervous and completely stressed out,
but i'm still extremely excited!

now, if you'll excuse me, i'm off to celebrate by doing my homework at the park because it's finally warm outside!
hallelujah!

20 June 2011

summer sounds: beach boys' party!

it just wouldn't be summer without them.
last year i posted about pet sounds, my absolute favorite album of all time, but this year i'm posting about a live recording of the beach boys called "beach boys' party!"

it's pretty self-explanatory.
but it's pretty dang awesome, too.

this record is so upbeat and fun and makes you feel like you're just hanging out in a recording studio with the boys singing songs together, goofing off, and laughing.

so, basically, put this record on, close your eyes, and you're in heaven.

fun fact: the recording of "barbara ann" that we all know and love came from this very album!
so, imagine "barbara ann" times ten and you've got this charming and fun record.

anyway, buy it/check it out from the orem library/borrow it from a friend and let the party of the century begin!

track listing [because they're all my favorite]:
