en route: the hike to the waterfall

i saw some seriously beautiful scenery on this hike.
breathtakingly beautiful scenery.
it made the difficulty of the hike [pretty much uphill the whole way complete with amateur rock-climbing] all the more worth it.

continental divide

so, we took a field trip today to giron to hike to some waterfalls, and on the way we stopped at the continental divide.
it literally took my breath away.
i'm in love with south america.

more photos from the grueling hike and beautiful scenery to come.

dear dad:

today was a little rough. so i put my earbuds in on the way to afternoon shift, put my ipod on shuffle, and this rascals song played.

it was just what i needed. it almost felt like a pep talk and it made me so happy you're my dad and that you raised me on great music.
talk to you tomorrow!

love kellie

ps: sorry the video is so weird.

a letter

dear kirk:
i've had a few people ask me what kind of food i eat here in ecuador. we mostly eat rice, meat, bread, fruit, and empanadas.
but we also eat pizza.
with peaches on it.
and it is delicious.

fried plantains [disc-shaped french fries, basically]

chalae's beautifully presented melon drink

jambeli part one

this photo does not do the house justice.

the beach was wonderful
[aside from a splitting headache, a 4:30am wakeup call, and cool weather for most of the morning] and the ride there had the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery i've ever seen in my entire life [it rivals alberta and provo canyon (pictures to be posted later)].

12 August 2009

today is a special day.

because my sister kari and my dad were both born today!!!

if i were in the states right now, i would...

1. hug them both.
2. make chocolate chip pancakes for their breakfast.
3. give them presents.
4. have a fun family dinner.
5. watch a funny movie.
6. sing them happy birthday.
7. and watch them open presents.

but i guess i'll just have to settle for talking to them on skype.

happy birthday, dad and kari! i love you both!

09 August 2009

la iglesia de jesucristo de los santos de los ultimos dias

reasons why i love church in ecuador:
1. testimony meeting.
in the states, testimony meetings are seemingly filled with travelogues, public declarations of gratitude, and longwinded stories.
in ecuador, testimonies are just that: testimonies. concise statements that testify to the congregation of what they know to be true.
also, instead of individuals going up one at a time to speak, families walk up together, each member speaks, and then they all walk back to their seats together. it's beautiful to watch and is such a moving symbol of how families can be together eternally.

2. hymns.
last week we were accompanied by a mia maid-aged flautist.
this week we were accompanied by both a keyboardist and violinist.
beautiful.

3. talks.
like testimonies, talks are concise, to-the-point, and simple yet profound. i never once looked at the clock, felt like i would fall asleep, or grew tired of the speaker.
there were monologues, no jokes to open with. just simple words strung together to form a beautifully constructed, moving talk.

i can't believe how much i've learned since i've been here.
it's hard to believe how much one can change in a little over a week.

but it's possible.

08 August 2009

it's the same in any language.

every morning, when i wake up at 6:40 [yes, you read that correctly] in the a.m., i climb sleepily out of the top bunk and peek through the slit in the curtains to greet the day.

and every morning, when i wake up, i feel so much gratitude for the opportunity, the privilege, i have to be here.

it's kind of hard to believe. sometimes, in the van on the way to the orphanages or walking out of our house to town, i look at the beautiful view and say, "we're in ecuador. can you believe it?"

it all feels like a dream. one of those dreams that has the bad timing of entering your mind minutes before waking, causing the harsh beeping of the alarm to jolt you awake and shut your eyes as quick as you can to grasp onto the wispy ends of your beautiful, sleepy vision.

the work is hard, the poopy [cloth]diapers are gross, the kids scream and cry and hit each other, but every cloud has a silver lining and every day has enough good to eliminate the bad.

and that is what i've learned thus far.

ps: expect some funny stories in my next post [teaser = it pays to know a little spanish].

pps: tomorrow is beach day! pictures will follow!

05 August 2009

"tu cacapopopish!"

after three flights, two hours of waiting in customs, and three airplane meals, i am HERE!
the picture posted below is proof that i truly am in ecuador.
it's the friendliest billboard i've ever seen!

so here is my readers' digest version of my travels.

slc:
wait, wait, wait for two hours.
hop on plane.
eat sandwich.
head to....

houston:
arrive just in time.
sit down.
relax.
watch 17 again [highly recommended].
eat grossly delicious cheeseburger, salad, and two cookies.
watch race to witch mountain [dumbest movie ever].
look out the window at lights of quito.
practice spanish with a man on the plane.
arrive in...

quito:
wait in customs for almost two hours.
experience the crazy drivers of ecuador.
sleep sleep sleep.
wake up late.
drive to airport [again]
run to shuttle.
shuttle to plane.
sit down.
take off.
eat sandwich and DELICIOUS PEACH JUICE.
see cuenca from a birds eye view.
fall.
in.
love.

this is the view from my balcony.

seriously, though... i love it so much. i never want to leave.
it is HARD WORK. and there are some shifts that are so frustrating that i just don't know how to deal with it.
but loving those kids, receiving those slobbery kisses and abrazos, and knowing that they are safe and happy and loved is totally and completely worth it.

i'm hugging orphans for all y'all.
i'll post some pictures tomorrow [or probably friday] that i took of our visit to a shelter for women and girls on monday. so. fun.

chao!

31 July 2009

alive and well

this will be very fast and pictureless.

but i just wanted to say five things:

1. cuenca is the most beautiful city in the world.
2. i feel completely at home here.
3. the weather is perfect.
4. the food [so far] is delicious.
5. i love you all so so so much.

i'll try to post an in-depth travelogue tomorrow with two [2] pictures.

until then, buenas noches from ecuador!

nerdnerdnerdnerdnerdnerdnerdnerdNERD!

after four nights of this...

i finally accomplished this...

wearing these.

this is what i looked like.

ps: did you notice the 125 max combo and amount of perfect/marvelouses??
yeah. i'm pretty cool.

"when through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply"

today was rough.
regardless of this beautifully-crafted dessert concocted [and consumed] by yours truly saturday night.

a civil war reenactment [aka a reenactment of my high school early-morning seminary days] occurred this morning.
add to that going to church with wet hair, and sitting next to a high-pitched, screaming baby resulted in the worst bad mood i've had in months.
YEARS, even.
everything annoyed me.
i was the grinch, scrooge, and oscar the grouch all rolled into one.
even after partaking of the sacrament, i was seething.

but then i listened to the first talk.
even though it's only been a matter of hours since i heard it, i still don't remember exactly what it was about. i remember him relating an experience with getting his eyes checked to having the right perspective in life and that softened me a little.

what really changed me, however, was a short conversation with an older lady who visit-teaches my mom.

i've only met her a couple times, and i, sadly, don't even know her name, but she knew all about me and what i have experienced this past year. she expressed how proud she was of me for sticking it out in rexburg for the summer even though it was extremely difficult at times. she asked me, genuinely, how i felt about going to ecuador and even though i usually just gave the same "i'm so excited" spiel to everyone else, i felt strongly to tell her how i had really been feeling. i told her how scared i was to go and how overwhelming this whole experience was getting to be.
and she looked at me with her kind, wise, electric-blue eyes and said, "you are going to learn so much and come out of this experience a better person."

i can't count how many times i've heard that since i decided to go to ecuador, but her words pierced me in a way that i can't explain.

i sat and pondered those words during the announcements and opening and practice hymns and felt a little sliver of peace.

then the lesson started. it was given by a woman from rwanda who lost everything, even members of her immediate family, and moved far away from her homeland to belgium, joined the church, got married, moved to new orleans, lost everything again in hurricane katrina, and ended up in orem for educational purposes only to pack up and move again [tomorrow] back to belgium.

she has known true heartbreak and indescribable pain. she has suffered through nightmarish trials, yet she is strong, steadfast, and faithful. her example and lesson about enduring trials with faith filled me with so much joy and peace that i felt like i could float out of the building.

and then, my mom's visiting teacher said something to me right before i left the room. she pointed to yvonne, the RS teacher, looked at me, and said "when you get back, if you use that time well and immerse yourself in service, you will be as strong as yvonne. good luck."

tears stung my eyes as i thanked her and i walked out of church that day feeling like the person who had entered the building a few hours earlier was a complete stranger [and isn't that what church should always be like?].

i am strong.
i can do hard things [as my mom always tells me].
there is joy in service.
have the right perspective.
there is love all around us.
we are known by name, watched over, love and protected by a higher power.
and, maybe most importantly, we are never alone.

these things i know to be true, and these things i know i will gain a greater knowledge of in ecuador.

"when through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not thee o'erflow,
for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress"
hymn #85, "how firm a foundation", 4th verse

mannequin clandestine love affair
captured 11 july 2009
art director: justin matthew brunson

-three-ish days ago, i said the following:
"i have this theory that, when it comes to clothing, the phrase "i can't pull that off" is a myth.
i am totally wrong.
i definitely cannot pull this off.
i should know.
i spent thirty minutes making one and felt like a little girl when i put it on."
however, i forgot to say what "this" was.
i was referring to this headband.
i made one, as i mentioned, wore it to see harry potter, and i'm still not sure about it.

can you see me wearing that?
what do you think?

here's what i think:
if it were all one color, i could pull it off. i think, if i attempt this again [which i probably will], i'll use black grosgrain with black chiffon or lace or something not so... bedsheet-y [which is what i used for the buds on my trial headband].
but i just don't know.

-my pre-departure goal is to master "take on me" on expert on ddr supernova.
i will not fail.
i will conquer.
and i will take a victory lap around the family room if when i succeed.

-one time i had a conversation with my fellow jorgensens concerning food.
the following question was posed:
"if you could live anywhere just for the food, where would you live?"
i, at the time, chose the mediterranean.
pasta, gyros, pizza, falafel... what more could i possibly ask for??

but times have changed.
and i think i'll have to pick mexico.
i constantly crave it.
CONSTANTLY.
earlier today i daydreamed about an eighty-nine cent chicken burrito from taco bell paired with a nice, tall, cold horchata.

-a couple days ago, i went to the orem library [for the second time this week] to return some unsatisfying music and pick up some cds of artists i've recently discovered/always wanted to check out.
it was wonderful.
can i share it with you?
oh, i forgot! this is my blog! i can say whatever i want to say and you, the lowly reader, can do absolutely nothing about it! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!
[sorry. that was completely uncalled for. i just couldn't help myself.]

1. hello, dolly! original broadway cast recording
carol channing is simply charming. i adore her gravelly voice.
however, i have little to say about the rest of the cast.
i was expecting good things from the guy who played cornelius hackl, but i was left disappointed. there's nothing more disgusting than forced, shaky vibrato. ew.

2. ballad of the broken seas // isobel campbell & mark lanegan
isobel campbell's voice is sweet, breathy, and dreamy.
mark lanegan sounds like johnny cash in his later years.
but he's forty-four.
apprently he was in the queens of the stone age.
he was the lead singer.
i don't think i'll be checking them out anytime soon.
there aren't many listenable tracks on this album for me, but i enjoyed "(do you wanna) come walk with me?" and "revolver".

3. in ear park // department of eagles
these guys are a recent find.
and by "recent" i mean "this morning."
DOE is made up of grizzly bear's daniel rossen and his former college roommate fred nicolaus.
i listened to three songs on their website,
downloaded "no one does it like you" for free off said website,
looked up the band in the orem library database and never looked back.
if i could describe this album in one word, i would choose "spring".

4. smokey rolls down thunder canyon // devendra banhart
i've heard this man's name thrown around for some time now, i've seen his cameo in nick & norah's infinite playlist [twice], and i'm just now listening to him.
i got fourteen tracks into this album and had to stop.
i just don't know what to think about dear devendra.
every song is so completely different.
i do know, however, that i enjoyed the first three tracks very much.

5. "oh, you're so silent jens" // jens lekman
i love this man.
and i love this compilation.
when i was still in rexburg, i would listen to him as i rode my bike to and from work.
i felt like i was in a movie set in the 1960s.

6. perfecting loneliness // jets to brazil
my favorite.
i think i'm kind of in love with blake schwarzenbach.

7. friend // grizzly bear
favorite track: css's cover of "knife".
genius.
the rest of it? i don't know... i'm still deciding if i like it.

-right now i'm reading the actor and the housewife, shannon hale's newest novel.
i am a huge fan of her writing style [the first time i finished austenland, i closed the book, sighed, and started reading it all over again. RIGHT after i finished it! that's how good it is],
and that hasn't changed in this novel, but the story is just... weird.
i don't know what to make of it.
and i don't understand a lot of it.
i would elaborate, but i don't want to ruin the storyline for those who have yet to read it [or bore the heck out of anyone else who might be reading this].

-i am the proud owner of these shoes.
i feel like i'm walking on air.

-i took two quizzes for OSSO in preparation for my departure earlier this week.
as a whole, it took approximately 2.75 hours to complete both.
but it was all worth it.
it's really hitting me hard that i'm leaving and i'm scared and nervous and overwhelmed, but so excited.
all experiences that make me feel like this before they even start are good for me.
it's good to feel uncomfortable, to do something different, to make the most out of life.

south america will be good for me.

-i have this theory that, when it comes to clothing, the phrase "i can't pull that off" is a myth.
i am totally wrong.
i definitely cannot pull this off.
i should know.
i spent thirty minutes making one and felt like a little girl when i put it on.

-the past two days i learned that inspiration cannot be forced.
it either happens or it doesn't.

-today i ate the most delicious lunch. here is the recipe:
1. saute summer squash with some onions and garlic and cook wacky mac and ravioli.
2. eat for dinner.
3. put leftovers into containers and leave overnight.
4. at precisely 1:45, reheat leftover pasta and squash in microwave for one minute.
5. wash and slice a fresh tomato from the garden.
6. mix up pasta/squash combination and add tomato.
7. pour 1.5 tablespoons of newman's own garlic balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing over concoction and sprinkle parmesan cheese on top.
8. pour yourself a tall glass of water and bring outside to eat on the patio along with a gordon korman novel.
9. bon apetit!

-speaking of, has anyone outside of the jorgensen family heard of gordon korman?

-HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE IN THREE HOURS.
i've heard mixed reviews,
but i'm still excited.

-if you are a girl and have recently run out of body wash and are looking for a new scent, pick this one.
you will not be sorry.

-did i mention that i got a haircut?

20 July 2009

you're a part of me and i can't wait to see you again.

so, i'm back home.

to celebrate my homecoming [and reclamation of my room], i slept in until eleven, ate chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, stayed in my pjs until 5, visited the orem library [which was a little disappointing], and ate pizza for dinner.

i'm feeling better about not being in idaho.
it was really hard saturday and sunday, but i know why i'm here and i'm so excited to start this new adventure!

i spent the whole day [pretty much] unpacking and cleaning and organizing and de-junking.
it feels good.
and i like how my room is looking.
it feels more like my room instead of a guest room.
i like that.

au revoir.
i am off to work on a top secret project.

18 July 2009

we're the coolest kids and we take what we can get.

beautiful people captured 17 july 2009

i've been holding them in since monday, july sixth.
i built a dam in my eyes and made sure it wouldn't burst.

but the sudden realization that another last had just occurred broke down the dam walls [haha] and the tears spilled over my eyes onto my cheeks.

i felt it.
another ending.

i saw my friends run alongside justin's car and i rolled down the window to grasp fingers and everything i had tried to hold in came pouring out.

earlier that night, i told justin that "up" had ruined me because i had cried in every single movie i'd watched since then, but me being emotional had nothing to do with pixar and their innate power to control my tear ducts.

the blame is all on me.

i have never had such a wonderful summer.

and i have the people pictured above to thank for it.

friends,
it was the best summer of my life.
thanks for the night bike rides,
scenic drives,
spray park adventures,
ramirez runs,
hugs,
laughs,
and sunday walks.
i love you all so much.
i told most of you that last night, but if i didn't,
please know that i truly, truly do.
love koko

on repeat.

15 July 2009

nights over kortedala

on saturday i bought a camera for one dollar and fifty cents [not including tax].
so today, i bought two rolls of film for three dollars and seventy-seven cents [this is starting to sound like a mastercard commercial].
and my new project is to use up that film and take pictures of people and places and things i love [and will miss] in rexburg;
i'm really excited for this project!
so excited, in fact, that i don't think i will go anywhere without this camera hanging around my neck for the rest of my time here in idaho.
i feel like a tourist.
and i love it.

in other news, i never thought i would feel the way i do right now.
i have never [NEVER EVER] felt sad to leave rexburg.
usually i'm done with this place after two semesters.
but i came back for more.
and i'm getting to be so sad to leave.
experiencing all these lasts lately have really begun to hit me. i mean, i know i'm coming back in january, but that feels so far away [probably because it is].
it's like the end of an era.
when i come back, things will be different.
everything will be different.
but i know that it will still be great.
[are these words really coming out of my mouth fingertips?]

13 July 2009

heard today at the rexburg opinion center

"i really appreciate you talking with me for this long, sir. it means a lot. ... i said 'sir'?! ... oh, i could've sworn i said 'ma'am'! i'm so sorry, i meant to say 'ma'am'!"

nice save, gretsky.

feliz cumpleanos!

today is my dear friend lyndee's birthday.
she is 20 years old
and she is marvelous.

she is always, always there for me.
she cheers me up when i'm sad,
listens to me when i'm upset,
laughs at my stupid jokes,
and constantly thinks of others.

and i'm so glad she's my friend.

love you, crazy toes!
happy birthday!

i apologize.

i apologize for the lack of posts,
pictures,
and thoughts.

but know that this dear blog never strayed far from my heart.

after a small pyrotechnic display brought on by my computer charge cord
and three days without access to the universe via interweb,
i am BACK.

and i had a lovely time at home.
it was blissful, fun, amazing, and family-filled.

i will properly update with pictures and such very, very soon,
but i just wanted to let you all know that i am alive, well, and ready for more steady blogging.

ps: in three weeks, i will be in south america. how crazy is that?
