sabes que estoy colgando en tus manos?

i'm missing this place a lot.

i think it's because i've been listening to these songs on repeat.

04 May 2010

i have spent this month feeling sorry for myself.

i am still unemployed.
i was given false hope when one of the places i applied to called me today only to tell me that since i'm only in utah for the summer, they don't want me.
all of my dearest friends [except for a select few in provo i haven't seen yet (my fault)] are in idaho.
i'm bored all the time.
and my room is a disaster.

today, though, was by far the hardest.

i am currently dejunking my room.
so far, i've thrown/given away a bunch of junk [including a very incriminating journal from my junior year of high school (which probably should have been burned)].
i found myself at 3pm sitting in the midst of it all, feeling completely overwhelmed and depressed.
i looked over at my bedside table and saw a huge stack of papers hiding in the bottom shelf.
as i took them out, stacks at a time, i found treasures:
a drawing of harry potter and ginny weasley holding hands given to me by my oldest niece,
countless birthday cards ranging from 1990-2006,
pictures and pictures and pictures,
old school papers,
journals,
and a stack of postcards from exotic places sent to me by my dad when i was a baby.

as i read every word on every page/card/postcard, i was overcome with emotion.
i began to ask myself why i was feeling this way when i had so much to be grateful for.
all of those papers and cards reminded me that i was loved and appreciated.
i have a great family and awesome friends and the glorious message of the gospel.

as i pondered this today and gave thanks for everything [and everyone] i have in my life, this little gem popped up in my google reader. i love mormon messages and i used to watch them on sundays last semester as i got ready for church. they are inspiring and strengthening and tearjerking. but this one spoke to me. as i watched this particular video earlier tonight, i couldn't hold back my tears. it was exactly what i needed to hear and see. i can't imagine having to endure such a heartbreaking, painful trial. i don't think i could do it. but, stephanie and christian nielson endured and are still enduring. and their faith is strong. hearing their testimonies about trials in life strengthened mine and i hope they strengthen yours.

01 April 2010

happy april fools day!

taken 22 years ago on my very first [fake?] birthday post cake-smashing

i'm sure my mom will deny this,
but last night as i was drifting off into dreamland i had a
Staggering
Thought.

what if my birthday was really april 2nd, but i've been april fooled my whole life into believing that my birthday is actually today?

did i blow your mind?

thought so.

in other news, my [supposed] birthday has been wonderful and it's only 10:31am!
i was woken up by many birthday texts,
i received two amazing gift cards courtesy of mama and papa j,
and i even had a FULL CONVERSATION with plaid shirt.

what a day!
and it's only going to get better!

did you know that salvador dali and walt disney teamed up to create an animated short film in 1948?
[watch it in full screen.
it is awesome.]

29 March 2010

la la la la la

i had a completely incredible weekend.

i would love to write about it, but my skirt needs a zipper, my head needs some excedrin, and my eyes need some sleep.

two thoughts to tide you over until the blessed weekend update:
1. tonight we have fhe at our bishop's home. i guess the activity is hot-tubbing. weird?
2. it has been a particularly blustery, cloudy day in my neck of the woods. so, obviously, i chose "warmth of the sun" by the beach boys to accompany me home after class. summer, please.

21 March 2010

today,

my bishop came up to me after sacrament meeting had ended, took my hand, and said, "the Lord told me during this meeting that i needed to tell you how much He cares about you. He loves you. don't forget that."

i hope i never forget.

19 March 2010

i understand that this was for a good cause...

but seriously?

11 March 2010

i'm pretty sure i used this picture for your last birthday...

today is my oldest sister's birthday!

kirsten is someone i really admire.

she's brave, courageous, a phenomenal and loving mother to three beautiful kids, super talented in the craft/sewing/freezerpaperstenciling realm, supportive, and has the cutest house.

i remember how much i looked up to her when i was little. i wanted to look like her, act like her, and even have a room knee-deep in clothes like her [one out of three isn't bad].

it's funny how some things don't change.

kirsten, i hope you had a superb birthday! i can't wait to go home and go thrifting [and maybe yardsale-ing] and lunching and singstar-ing and ddr-ing with you! i love you, big sis!

10 March 2010

right now...

i'm listening to this song on repeat because...

i'm applying for a nannying/live-in educator job for an lds family that lives just outside of the big apple!

i'm in an empire state of mind.

wish me luck!

09 March 2010

oh, the irony.

we have had a surprisingly mild winter this year.
last week was so nice, it felt like spring.
i didn't wear a winter coat at all.
yesterday was especially beautiful.
at night, all i needed was my osso sweatshirt.
i was so happy about this that i almost posted yesterday about how winter is finally over and spring has sprung.

and then today...

today it snowed.

WHEN WILL IT END?!?

08 March 2010

our mountain

on saturday, we hiked r mountain
[it's rexburg's version of the y, only tinier].
it was awesome and scary and absolutely beautiful.

a revelation.

was andrew bird...
influenced by this song?

vladimir horowitz, you're my hero.

mrs. hall, the sixth grade teacher at two rock elementary school, was scary.
everyone dreaded sixth grade because of her infamous Research Project.
said project was biographical and included the following:
-a twelve page paper about the person
-a timeline marking important events in the life of the person [with pictures, if possible]
-a fifteen minute speech AS the person [complete with costume]
-an activity or quiz for the class to participate in that has something to do with your person and why he or she was important
-and a handmade doll mounted on a cardboard background.

we moved to two rock, california when i was eleven.
right before the sixth grade.
when i heard of mrs. hall's reputation and INSANE research project, i was terrified, overwhelmed, and completely unprepared for such a task.

but i realized that with this project, as with most things in life, it was completed little by little and despite my trepidation, i did it! i'm still proud of the work i did in that class and had completely forgotten about that project until today at 12:20pm in my humanities 202 class.

right now, we're learning about the romantic period in music. we've been listening to a lot of puccini and wagner.
today, we listened to rachmaninoff.
my professor told us that rachmaninoff's piano concertos are the most difficult piano pieces to date and that you are a true professional pianist when you can play them.

to demonstrate this, he showed us a video of the subject of my 6th grade project, vladimir horowitz.
i realized while i was watching that i had never seen him play because back in 1998, youtube didn't even exist.
and after watching, i can say that my respect for this man has grown exponentially.
not only did he successfully and beautifully place this piece, HE DID IT FROM MEMORY.

see for yourself:

commercial break!

i have three tests and one presentation this week.
ugh.
i've been killing two birds with one stone by listening to the music i have to know for my humanities class while studying the art works i have to know for tomorrow's exam.
and i cannot stop listening to this song:
so beautiful.

26 February 2010

armchair apocrypha

i'm not a huge andrew bird fan,
but this video blows me away.

can it just be spring already?

i long for the day when i can wear...

without getting frostbite.

23 February 2010

difficulties: a list

it's very, very difficult at the moment to:

1. have patience.
2. live with a bunch of girls [don't get me wrong... i love my roomies, but i don't love the dirty kitchen/hairy bathroom/drama].
3. get out of bed in the morning when it's FREEZING in the house.
4. go to class when it's FRIGID outside.
5. not fall asleep in my art history class now that the lighting is fixed in the lecture hall [which means that all the lights are turned off except for the ambience lights on each side of the room].
6. remember that i'm halfway done with this semester and soon i will be home enjoying warm weather, family, and delicious food.
7. have the motivation to do homework for my non-art history classes.
8. keep my room clean [although i cleaned it today].

i am most definitely in a slump.
the novelty of being here has worn off.
i find that my biggest form of entertainment lately is reading the scroll and making fun of the headlines [ex. "Apartment unity conquers differences", "Shoppers turn frugal, coupon clip to save", and (my personal favorite) "Fire alarm interrupts rappers". i'm pretty sure that last one was done purposefully as a form of intervention. REXBURG DOES NOT YIELD RAPPERS.] and articles.

only one year left.
i can do it.

right?

22 February 2010

kellie and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

today was a little rough.

i went to the advising center to figure out my class plan for my proposed major change and was there for over an hour.
even though i was told that i have a good chance of changing my major [regardless of the fact that the amount of credits i have will be close to The Number when i graduate],
and even though i planned out all of my classes and figured out that i will be done with school next april,
i left the office feeling so angry.

angry at the school,
angry at the stupid policies and hoops i have to jump through to achieve my dream,
and angry because the looks i got from the lady at the advising center when i told her the amount of credits i have right now made me feel really self-conscious.

and then i went to the sewing lab to pick up some stuff and i accidentally walked in on a class and the teacher got mad at me and told me to wait outside until they were done.

and i got even angrier.

i stormed out of the clarke on the verge of tears and started to mentally write this blog post.
it was going to be titled "myth vs. reality"
and it was going to be the rant of the decade.

after that, i went to porters and was treated poorly by one of the employees.
all i wanted was some interfacing.
i didn't want any attitude from her.

after THAT, i went home and prepared the lesson for fhe.

it was on elder bednar's talk "and nothing shall offend them".

after reading it and preparing my lesson, i felt a tiny bit better.
then i went to the kitchen and handwashed all the dishes [even though none of them were mine].

and then my fhe bros came over.
and i gave my lesson.

and right after i finished, i felt completely better and completely stupid for choosing to be offended just because i was throwing a pity party for myself [it's my party and i'll cry if i want to].

and THEN, one of my roommates gave me a bracelet she made after hearing i had had a bad day.

isn't it funny how circumstances can change simply by choice?

anyway, i guess the point of this whole post is to remind myself that i can choose to be angry or i can choose to make the best of the dumpy wonderful situation i'm in right now.

17 February 2010

i'm pretty sure...

...clothing construction 1 will be the death of me

because

i cannot hand-sew hems for the life of me.

AOWIJE;OI3EJHFNSIKSNMFOPIWJEOD;IQWJD;!!!!!????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!!!??

it's that time again...

photo from my october 09 trip to san diego

...the time of the mid-winter blues.
the obvious remedy for this illness is visiting a tropical locale and walking barefoot in the sand with the warmth of the sun hitting every inch of exposed skin
instead of
walking in ankle-deep icy puddles with the bone-chilling wind cutting through every layer of clothing you happened to wear that day.

thank goodness i'm heading to the exotic land of utah tomorrow!

16 February 2010

six (6) things i've made in the last week [or so]:

1. heart garlands (just in time for v-day)
2. another huge stack of flashcards
3. danish puff pastries smothered in dark chocolate (and crumbs)
4. pajama pants (that i have yet to try on)
5. spaghetti sauce
6. A. HUGE. MESS.

happy tuesday, everyone!

15 February 2010

three-day week.

i will be in utah this time on thursday.
princess has her very first auditioned ballet performance this weekend and
i
can't
wait!

i've always loved watching her perform [she's such a ham] because
she always looks like she's having so much fun.
and she looks that way because she IS having so much fun.

I'M SO EXCITED!

i'm feeling the pull.

i want to go on a road trip.

14 February 2010

200

this is my 200th post.
once i realized i was close to this number, i started thinking about all the options i had to celebrate this momentous occasion.

but i think, because it is
a) tuesday
b) february
c) the eve of a huge art history exam
and
d) 4:46pm with one more class to go before i'm done on campus,
i'll just stick with simplicity and say,

HAPPY 200TH POST, CASTAWAYTHECLOUDS!
and
thank you
[to the ten (10!) people who follow this blog and motivate me to keep writing]
!!!!!

here's to 200 more crazyrandom posts.

08 February 2010

everything is rosy.

this morning, i woke up to this song with the sun shining through my little window,

and i felt just like joseph gordon-leavitt's character in this scene of (500) days of summer.

my room!

world, meet my room!

i am super happy with it.
and i'm super happy that it's finally finished!

the perfect snow song.

-------------------------------------

i'm working on getting my room picture-perfect.
expect a second post today with photos of my most favorite room i've ever had.

02 February 2010

i hate cooking for one.

proof that i am growing up:
1. i make my bed and clean my room every single day.
2. homework takes first priority.
3. early to bed and early to rise.
4. i take my vitamins every day.

it's weird, but i've really never been happier*.

*except for the 2.5 months i was in ecuador.

a letter and a list

dear new crush:
i think you're cute.
and nice.
and so hardcore.
could we get to know each other a little better?
WBS!
--kellie
ps: i think it's a little weird that we lived in [kind of] the same place when we were younger.
and that you proclaimed proverbs 3:5-6 as your favorite scripture today in sunday school because i said the exact same thing at fhe last monday.
coincidence?
i think not.

-------------------------------

why i'm smiling: a list

1. fresh [cheap] produce
2. picking up a guitar for the first time in a very, very long time
3. killing cherub rock on rock band
4. she & him [specifically this song]
5. church
6. vanilla yogurt + dark chocolate chips
7. cooking
8. adoption news
9. listening to gillian welch and conor oberst's rendition of "lua" over and over
10. the new testament
11. getting answers to questions
12. working out at 8:30pm on a saturday night
13. laughing with hannah, lyndee, and mary
14. making my bed everyday
15. my new, cheerful, rosy curtains
16. going to bed early
17. burberry the beat
18. meeting new people
19. being called mom [even if it's in an fhe context]
20. having a clean room

28 January 2010

success?

this is the finished product.
it's way too big for my pillow,

crookedly sewn,

and completely flawed.

but i'm still proud of it--in all its imperfect glory.

27 January 2010

joy: a list

1. i learned every ounce of information written on the flashcards pictured above, allowing me to
2. pass the three huge tests i had this week;
3. i have awesome roommates and
4. great friends;
5. i love my classes;
6. my ward is wonderful;
7. i don't even mind the snow [!].

life is funny.

i spent hours crying about my return to rexburg the day before i left home,
only to find that i am happier than i've ever been [in idaho].

what has made you happy today?

26 January 2010

cortinas nuevas

these are my new curtains.
i made them from a thrifted sheet i've had for forever.
they're a little sheer, but they're infinitely better than the curtains that were originally in my room [mostly because they cover the entire window].

i'm pretty proud of these curtains because
a) i didn't use a tape measure of any kind and they're the perfect size,
b) they complement the decor,
c) when the sun shines in my window, they make my room look rosy and wonderful.

success!

23 January 2010

joyeaux anniversaire!

today is my mom's birthday.
she's the greatest mom in the world.

not only does she bake the most delectable treats in the world,
she is an amazing seamstress,
a dedicated grandma,
completely selfless,
and she deals with my daily phone calls and grumpy moods.

basically, she's a saint.
and i love her more than i can adequately say. she's my best friend and my confidante and i'm so blessed to have her in my life.

happy birthday, mom!

ps: your package will be sent on monday. sorry!

21 January 2010

short and sweet

1. check this out! so cool!

2. expect pictures of my new curtains tomorrow!

20 January 2010

i'm a big girl now!

i take a multi-vitamin,
spend hours doing homework,
cook meals for one,
drink cups of ginger tea when there's a tingle in my throat,
sew my own curtains,
and have even found myself using the phrase, "back when i was your age..." TWICE.

i feel like a real grown-up.
----------------------------------
in other news...

i'm attempting to cover this jimmy eat world song.

my very first sewing project will [hopefully] be done tomorrow.

it lightly snowed all day today and i enjoyed it [???!!!!!???].

i learned how to draw perspective today in my art history class and it BLEW MY MIND.

i'm growing more and more nervous about whether or not byu-idaho will let me change my major. a guy from my ward came over last night and he said he petitioned to change his major and it was no big deal.
but he had only 70 credits.
i have 104.
[eek!]
he said that it's not the end of the world if you're majoring in something you don't like.
he obviously doesn't know me
at
all.

the other day, i walked into my house and my roommate said, "wow! you're wearing pants! is this the first time you've ever worn pants to school?"
it wasn't.
but what can i say?
i love dresses.

i talked to plaid-shirt yesterday.
he's kind of forgetful [which is all the more endearing[.
i missed one opportunity to talk to said boy last week when he left his binder in class and the girl next to me grabbed it before i could and gave it to the teacher instead of trying to catch up to him to return it [which was my plan].
but yesterday, i was in luck.
because yesterday he left his jacket in class.
i watched him leave as i put my own coat on and looked forlornly behind me where he usually sits and thought to myself, "self, you will never muster up the courage to talk to plaid-shirt."
and then i saw it.
a navy blue quilted jacket.
i nervously zipped up my coat, and briskly walked out of the classroom, caught up to coatless plaid-shirt, and said,
"hey, i think you left your coat in the classroom."
and he, looking confused, replied,
"....i did?"
and i felt stupid.
but then he realized that he didn't have his jacket on and said,
"oh my goodness, i did. thank you so much for telling me!"
mission:accomplished.

who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?

my sisters have been talking about the mary tyler moore show for a while now.
i don't know why it took me so long to catch on!
this show is amazing!
i'm only halfway through season one, but i've already learned that...
1. rhoda has some serious style [and what's with all the fat jokes?? she's not fat!]
2. i want mary's apartment
3. ted baxter never fails to make me laugh
and
4. this show is 30 years old and it's still relatable.

watch it.
you won't regret it.

i can't get enough of these songs right now.
it's the norm for me to listen to one of these songs five times in a row before reluctantly trying on a different song for size.

not listed: tonight, tonight by smashing pumpkins
----------------------------

good news!

1. apparently i'm a secretly amazing bowler. for our ward social on monday night, we went to the rex [this movie theater/arcade/bowling alley/party place] to bowl and get to know each other. i told my roommates that i was the world's worst bowler, and proved it by getting a gutter ball and then knocking down three measly pins in the first and second frames, respectively.

every other frame was either a strike or a spare [except for the frame where my roommate told me that the number of pins i knocked down would be the number of boys i'd kiss this semester. i got one. haha]

what's up with that?

2. last night, i went to bed at 10:30pm. that hasn't happened since i was in ecuador. it felt good.

i feel like we've been on this rollercoaster-ride of emotions the past four years.

BE YOUR OWN HERO.

i just got back from whip it.

IT WAS AMAZING.

go see it.

09 January 2010

music make me lose control

last night at approximately eight o'clock, i was grumpy.

for

no

good

reason.

i walked a thousand miles in five-degree weather with my friend stilts,
met a let-down,
ate sundried tomato and basil wheat thins,
and listened to the majority of vampire weekend's new album [courtesy of pitchfork].

but then, a miracle happened.

i went to a dance party at 2-0-GR8 and completely let my hair down.
i danced like a maniac.

and allofasudden, the grumpiness was completely gone.

i most definitely wasn't the smoothest dancer there,
but i didn't care.

because i had so much fun.

thank you hannah, nikki, and lyndee.

08 January 2010

for every action there is an equal or opposite reaction.

this morning i had ample time to ready myself for my first class.
i took a shower,
put my face on,
dried my hair,
straightened my hair,
and could not see.

i was past due for a trim.

so i whipped out my scissors and began cutting.

and cutting.

and cutting.

and it looks like a five year-old took some plastic left-handed scissors to them.

looks like i'll be braiding my bangs back for the next month.

---------

in other news,

-i have made a goal this semester to make my bed every day.
because when i make my bed, i want the rest of my room to look nice and neat.
i've been doing it for almost a week (!) and i hate to admit it but,
my mom was right.

-i love my classes [so far] this semester.

-yesterday i ate a banana from ecuador.

-my room is coming together. but my best friend and i are going to start a secret project, so pictures might not be posted for a couple of weeks.
but be excited.
it's the coolest room ever.

07 January 2010

my sewing life will never be the same.

today in my sewing class, i learned how to thread/use a serger.
it is very intimidating.
and threading the machine is very, very frustrating the first time around.
and sometimes the needle breaks on your first attempt because you forgot to put the "tree" up.
but the results are pretty cool.
especially when you spend fifteen minutes trying to thread it all by yourself and successfully do it despite claims by the professor that the machine you were using was broken.
victory is sweet.

who knew there was a machine that could finish an edge, cut off excess fabric and use four different spools of thread to do it all?

what a machine.

...in which kellie has her first day of school.

today

i meant to take a first day of school picture, but i didn't have anyone to take it for me and i changed outfits [kind of] halfway through the day.
but i liked the outfit i picked out.

today

i walked and walked and walked to broulims and back to felicia's house with a hot pizza in my arms.
it was delicious.

today

i listened to in the aeroplane over the sea and fell in love with it all over again.
the title track is my favorite.

today

i felt intimidated, excited, impatient, antsy, and happy.
but not at the same time.

today

some guys from my ward came over and gave us a plate of cookies.
i don't like milk chocolate--or arrogance.

today

the snow on the roads was melting and i got slush in my flats and my tights got wet.
not fun.

today

i reminisced and realized, once again, how much i miss ecuador.
i miss my babies.

today

i walked into my room and felt so happy.
it's so cute.

today

i saw new faces and met new people.
it felt good.

today

five different strangers said hello to me.
isn't that nice?

and today

i felt okay about being here.
it's a christmas miracle!

"good luck in hell."*

well, i'm back in rexburg.

it's been so good to see my friends again, but it's weird to be here again.

it's also cold [especially walking to and from church--thank goodness for tights],
cloudy,
white,
and tiny.

on a lighter, more positive note, there is a new frozen yogurt place called "twizl berry".
it's just like the fro-yo shops in san diego.
which is weird because eva and i were just talking about those kinds of places and she asked if rexburg had one and i said something to the point of "no, and i don't think it'll ever happen".

boy, was i proved wrong.

here's hoping this semester/year is a good one.

hiatus.

remember when i used to blog once or twice or thrice in a typical week?

blogging just seems exhausting to me now.

i can never think of anything witty or clever or poignant to say [not that i said anything of the sort previously].

i get home from work and the last thing i want to do is write about my day.

welcome to the mundane life, kellie.

i really am happy, though.
i couldn't ask for a more pleasant working environment or nicer coworkers.
and it's nice to have something to do every day.
and to make money doing it everyday [should that be one word or two?].

regarding the twilight saga: new moon, hair, surprise visits, and a simple request.

dad: so, how was the movie?
mom: it was velveeta--bad cheese.

----------------------------

monkey: you know what? my cousin's dad's hair is made of salt and pepper.

----------------------------

the other day, an old friend from high school came into my work establishment on a whim.
i was genuinely happy to see her and we proceeded to talk for about ten minutes [when i should have been working--shhhhh].
even though i haven't seen her or even talked with her in about a year, it felt as though no time had passed as we chatted.

isn't it wonderful when that happens? i much prefer that to the awkwardness that seeps out of the pores of friendships that have gone stale over the course of time.

----------------------------

is there a man out there who could pretend to be my fiance so i could enter/win this contest?
megan and i would be very appreciative.
because learning beyonce's moves from her music video just isn't working.
